Problem
When loading the Payment Terminal, the Payment Terminal may take a long time on the "Loading customer list" stage of initialization. While this screen eventually progresses, it may take a significant amount of time.
Explanation
The Payment Terminal caches a list of all Customers in the QuickBooks company file. If a customer list is exceedingly long, the Payment Terminal will need to iterate through each active customer to cache them - therefore, a large number of active customers results in a longer loading time for the Payment Terminal
Solution
A handful of different solutions are available for this issue.
Mark old Customers as inactive in QuickBooks
Our software only caches/lists Customers that are marked as active in QuickBooks. Therefore, marking them as inactive may resolve this.
1
Open the Customer Center in QuickBooks.
From the Home Page in QuickBooks, open the Customer Center by pressing CTRL-J, clicking the Customers button on the Home Page/shortcut panel, or opening the Customers menu at the top (and clicking Customer Center).
2
Select relevant customers.
Select any Customers which could be considered "inactive." This will cause a variety of changes in the QuickBooks interface, and is designed for customers that you might not be interacting with for the foreseeable future, but would like to keep them in your QuickBooks company file for records keeping purposes.
3
Mark the customer as inactive.
Edit the customer by clicking the Edit button in the top-right, or right-clicking on the customer and select Edit Customer:Job. Then, select the Customer is Inactive checkbox, and click OK.
Run QuickBooks File Doctor
Intuit offers a software solution to fix consistency/latency issues within a QuickBooks company file: QuickBooks File Doctor. This program can be used to repair company files which may have been damaged by multiple users, improper disconnects from QuickBooks, or other issues with the company file.
It's best to run this utility at a time when all users can be disconnected from QuickBooks for some time, e.g. after business hours. The utility can take some time to complete, and users cannot be connected to QuickBooks during that time.
Increase available memory on the computer
Our software stores a cached copy of the customer list in QuickBooks in your computer's RAM. Generally speaking, a RAM upgrade can clear up slowness due to a large amount of active customers in QuickBooks.
